Investigating Astronomy
What it is: Investigating Astronomy is the first comprehensive astronomy textbook written specifically for high school students. This book includes all the major topics in an astronomy course with material to engage students in hands-on investigations and tools to help students learn in interactive and meaningful ways. The book also focuses on scientific inquiry; the process of making scientific claims and supporting them with evidence; and using scientific reasoning to justify and revise those claims.
Takeaway: The U.S. currently does not have enough scientists to compete as a global leader in emerging high-tech fields. With a few small changes, we can provide adequate support for women in the sciences — and boost long-term scientific achievement.
How TERC Can Help: Continue to educate yourself about this issue by reading, "The Double Bind in Physics Education: Intersectionality, Equity, and Belonging for Women of Color"by Dr. Maria Ong, Senior Researcher at TERC. The book takes readers inside the issue by following 10 women of color from their entrance into the undergraduate physics program through their pursuit of various educational and career paths.
