STEM education insights and resources for educators
Programs & Materials Highlights
Our forward-thinking and groundbreaking research projects often result in insightful and inspiring learning materials, many for free.
Mixing in Math
Mixing in Math (MiM) resources integrate math into everyday activities for children (ages 3-12) and caregivers, making math accessible and fun through games, crafts, storytelling, and daily routines. It's designed for parents, teachers, and after-school staff, offering activities aligned with Common Core standards that build math skills and confidence by connecting math to play, cooking, and building, proving that math isn't just for the classroom.
Takeaway: Children learn and grow best when teachers and parents show unity and work as true partners, creating the trust and security students need to take risks and thrive.
How TERC Can Help: TERC’s early childhood research, including its work with Latine families, shows how centering parents as partners in identifying problems of practice strengthens children’s learning and echoes this article’s call for deeper, more authentic educator–family collaboration.
STEM Fact!
In March 2019, Google employee Emma Haruka Iwao achieved a Guinness World Record by calculating pi to 31.4 trillion digits.
This session focuses on how numeracy serves as the cornerstone of K–5 mathematics learning and how reasoning supports students in building understanding and skills. Marilyn Burns will share video examples of students solving arithmetic problems mentally in one-on-one interviews and explaining how they reason, along with a set of takeaways that connect students’ thinking to classroom instruction.
TERC researchers are looking for input from 3rd–8th grade educators who teach STEM subjects on how they address Executive Function challenges in the classroom and how they use (or are considering using) AI to support differentiation and learning differences.
Complete a brief survey by December 20th for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card, and optionally indicate interest in a small, stipend-supported co-design opportunity in January 2026.
