Data Clubs
What it is: Data Clubs believes that middle school learners can and should know how to interpret data to make decisions and manipulate data to answer their own questions. Three modules engage them with “big” data—large data sets collected by government agencies, research institutes and international collaborations — curated by the Data Clubs team. The modules give students simple tools for visualizing and analyzing data on topics they care about.
Takeaway: Women of color make up less than 6% of bachelor’s degree earners in fields like engineering, computer science, and physics, despite ongoing recruitment efforts. A key issue is that these efforts often focus on "fixing" students rather than addressing the systemic inequities that deter them.
How TERC Can Help:The Double Bind in Physics Education: Intersectionality, Equity, and Belonging for Women of Color by Maria (Mia) Ong, Ph.D. follows the educational and career paths of 10 women of color pursuing degrees in physics and physics-related fields. The book also offers steps STEM departments can take to cultivate systemic change and a strong sense of belonging for underrepresented students.
Fun STEM Fact!
Less than 0.5% of the data created is ever used or analyzed.
