Excursions activities from the Forum for Equity in Elementary Mathematics

An Excursion is a sequence of related classroom activities that encourages students to apply the mathematics they are learning to the contexts of their own and others’ lives and communities. Each Excursion has been field tested, and is designed to provide every student the opportunity to:  

  • uncover their own unique mathematical strengths, experience, ideas, and interests 
  • apply the mathematics they are learning to a new context 
  • generate and pursue mathematical questions that interest them  
  • engage in new learning about aspects of mathematics in the world 
  • learn about people of diverse backgrounds and identities who use mathematics within a variety of fields

Teaching Word Problems to Beginning Math Learners (Online Facilitated)

This two-part online workshop will break down different language, math, and cognitive skills involved when students tackle word problems. This can help you more accurately diagnose what individual gaps students have when they are struggling with word problems. This workshop will also help you plan your units to make sure you are intentionally addressing the variety of skills students need to be successful when working on them.
